Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country. -David Hilbert

Math is important and it's important to help young children develop their mathematical thinking.

Mathematics is one of the most important and compulsory subjects taught in our Nigerian primary and secondary education. This is why the foundation you set for your child in this subject goes a long way in affecting their future academic performance. From nursery, children learn about numbers, arithmetic and geometry.

Math is measuring, sorting, building, recognising patterns, making comparisons, and describing the environment, as well as counting and knowing the names of shapes. There are many ways to incorporate math learning into everyday moments for your child.

You can foster a positive attitude toward math for your kids: Find ways to incorporate enjoyable math activities and math talk into regular activities like cooking, setting the table, and going grocery shopping, family game time and so on. Find Math activities your child enjoys ad feels confident participating in.

Emphasising maths from kindergarten will provide children with a strong basis for reasoning, estimation and thinking logically in later life. Their mathematical foundation and basics must be mastered if you want your child to increase their chances of academic success in the future. And if they face obstacles along the way, there are solutions available to help.

You can get a maths tutor from our platform Superprof Nigeria irrespective of your state or location.

One of the many reasons mathematics teachers in Nigeria is one of the most sorts after in the tutoring industry is that without having at least a credit in this subject, you cannot move a class ahead or get admission into a higher institution as a secondary school graduate.

Why Learning Maths At Nursery School and Kindergarten Is Important?

Early childhood education in Nigeria or any part of the world plays a crucial role in the formative years of a child. This is where the foundation of their academics and future careers begin.

It is at this stage they develop the skills which are needed in the acquisition of knowledge, manipulation of information, and reasoning. Studies have proven that the human brain is most receptive to learning from birth and three years of age.

At the nursery and kindergarten level, children begin to apply what they have learnt at home with other children and individuals outside of their home. This is the reason why the first why it is said that the first contact of education of a child comes from their parents and guardians.

More than a million neuron connections grow each second during the first few years of life. This is the reason why at infancy, the brain develops much faster.

It is at this period young children are supposed to strengthen and increase their cognitive and physical skills. The foundation you lay for your child at this stage and age is very crucial.

A study was conducted by a Nigerian researcher and the conclusion of the research proved that pupils who attend nursery schools are more likely to perform better academically than those who do not.

Children's attention span is usually low when they are younger because they can get easily distracted. However, if young children are enrolled at the nursery and kindergarten at a tender age, this will help enhance their attention span.

Minus the fact that enrolling them at a nursery and kindergarten school will help in their mathematical foundation, it is also an avenue for them to understand how socialization works, which is key to everyone's life. The input during the nursery years prepares them for starting their primary school education.

The math concepts that young children discover at nursery school are divided into 2 groups:

  • Learning numbers and how to use them
  • Exploring shapes, sizes and sequences

These basic skills will serve students later on in life when they need to manage their finances or start a business.

Learning Maths At Primary School

It is said that children's knowledge of math skills at the primary level "predicts their math achievement for later years. After the nursery and kindergarten education, the primary is next.

Mathematics for primary school beginners scheme of work ideally is usually a continuation from the scheme of work for mathematics in Nursery school.

This has been systematically arranged in such a way that there would be ease of progression and proper understanding for the children.

The major mathematical concepts introduced to primary students are basically:

  • Numbers
  • Geometry
  • Arithmetic
  • Pre-algebra
  • Counting

The goal of the curriculum for primary students is to help them understand and acquire the basic mathematical concepts to help them to be creative, with the ability to think, solve problems,  develop number and spatial sense and the ability to appreciate patterns and structures of number and shapes.

Their interest in learning mathematics is highly stimulated at this level.

By the end of primary school, children should be able to represent numbers and quantities, reason when problem-solving, calculate and communicate about the order of operations and show their working to maths questions.

There is no running away from mathematics and children should learn early that math is something that requires work.

Personalised and tailored support can be just what children need to boost their self-esteem both inside and outside of the classroom and make good progress.

At this stage, you can introduce a mathematics teacher to help your child, if you feel they are not doing so well understanding the concepts of mathematics. As earlier discussed, the mathematical foundation you lay for your child will go a long way in affecting their future academics.

Basic Maths Skills: Arithmetic for Kids

Arithmetics is the oldest and elementary branch of mathematics. All of the other branches of mathematics use the principles and rules of arithmetic. The word arithmetic comes from the Greek word arithmos, which means “number. Learning arithmetic is essential to understanding mathematics.

What is then is arithmetics?

Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with the study of numbers using various operations on them. Basic operations of math are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Maths is everywhere and throughout our lives, we need to make decisions informed by mathematical reasoning.

The basic operations of maths are what will guide us through the process of understanding the subject and being able to solve other issues. The first calculations done by a child represent a big step in their learning.

The best way to help kids learn the rules of arithmetic is to start with the addition and subtraction rules, as they are the simplest to understand.

Knowing the sign for 'add' and the one for 'subtract', division and multiplication are all steps along the path to a child understanding the concept and principles behind arithmetic. By using arithmetic to solve a problem, children familiarise themselves with the properties of numbers and how to manipulate them.

Getting good with maths is done to practice practice practice. With practice, children will be able to do simple sums, multiplications, subtractions and divisions as a reflex.

Practice Maths: Tools To Help Kids

Math is important and it’s important to help young children develop their mathematical thinking. When you focus your kids on problem-solving rather than getting the right answer, you ease them off from pressure and they learn more.

With a fun approach to learning, your child will be able to improve their skills whilst enjoying themselves!

If your child is finding it hard to understand maths, you do not need to worry about it. There are different ways to incorporate mathematics into their everyday learning experience which will, in turn, help them out. Some alternative approaches to learning to help your child view maths problems from a different angle are:

  • Get them involved while cooking and baking. Let them read the instructions, follow the recipes and weigh and measure the ingredients with you. You could make it interactive by asking them questions like I have a cup of 100g of sugar and I need 350g of sugar for the recipe. How many cups of sugar should I use? These sorts of questions will enable them to become familiar with quantities, fractions, temperatures and cooking units.
  • You can get an educational tablet for them. Kids love playing on phones and tablets, which is perfect for getting them to play educational games. Several apps online are fun and very educational at the same time. Encourage them to play these educational games which will test their maths skills without them even realising it.
  • If you notice your child enjoys reading books, get them textbooks that will stimulate their learning process on the subject.
  • You can also incorporate family time with them by playing some stimulating games like board games, puzzles etc that will develop their logic and reasoning skills. Children having a good time with their parents can boost their self-esteem and they will learn without any pressure.

Just find ways to incorporate enjoyable math activities and math talk into regular activities. However, if you think you need help stimulating your child's maths learning experience, then you can get a maths tutor to help you out.

There are several tutors on our tutoring platform ''Superprof Nigeria'' including maths teachers for kids and adults that can come teach your kids at home or tutor them online. The choice is yours and the prices are very affordable.
