In the last three years, IELTS is the most commonly written one by Nigerians for the Canadian migration process. It is the worlds most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration. It is highly recognised by educational institutions, employers, governments and professional bodies around the world. The cost of the exam is ₦79,000. The Candidates are tested on four key skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

TOEFL is used to access your comprehension and proficiency in English. It is one of the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 11,000 universities in over 150 countries. It might be one of the prerequisite to further your education in an  English speaking country as a foreigner regardless of the course you choose to study. The cost of writing the test ranges between ₦60,000 and ₦75,000 depending on the location in Nigeria. The Candidates are tested on four key skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

GMAT is a computer adaptive test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English. There are over 600 test centres in 114 countries. The grade or score accepted varies from school to school. This test is the most widely accepted exam for MBA admissions worldwide or anyone who wants to go to business school.  The cost of the Gmat examination in Nigeria ₦N100,000. The candidates are tested on analytical writing, integrated, verbal and quantitative reasoning.

If you decide that you want to start an English teaching career with any of the above certifications, it is important to note that they have a validity period. IELTS and TOEFL certification is valid for two years while the GMAT certification is valid for five years.

Is A Degree Or Qualification In English Enough?

Technically you do not need a degree or any legal requirement in Nigeria in order to teach English privately though you do have to learn English, of course. However, if you choose to join a teaching agency that gives offer teaching services to people, then you will need to present them with proof that you have been educated to at least a university degree level or have a certificate or certifications that you have the necessary knowledge and training to teach a particular subject.

Teachers of a specific academic subject will normally have a degree or qualification or some sort of training in that subject field. This is because, despite the fact that you can tutor anyone who is at a level below you, in theory, you still want to have the knowledge to teach them things beyond their current course. The syllabus and curriculums of subjects and courses change with time, so you need to be well informed at all times so as to attract more jobs and not lose the ones you have. Being able to teach beyond the curriculum is about much more than just the subject itself; it enables you to help students develop critical thinking skills; understand their own learning style and achieve their academic goals.

Which are the best professional English exams in Nigeria?
Expanding your knowledge of the English language as a teacher in the subject will put you on top of your career both locally and internationally (Source: StockSnap)

There is a range of courses, materials and resources to help you become a more effective English teacher on the British council website (www. britishcouncil.org.ng) whether you are new to English teaching or you just want to develop your classroom skills or improve your career prospects.

A university or higher education degree does not necessarily come in handy for those who want to work as a private tutor especially to primary students. All you need to have is a certain degree of fluency, a variety of writing skills, and an in-depth understanding of spoken general English. If you didn't go to university, you will be expected to have at least taken English classes at your junior or secondary level of education in school. Thankfully, the English language in Nigeria is a compulsory subject from basic 1-9 and at the secondary level.

On the other hand, if you want to work with schools in Nigeria, the minimum requirement is NCE (Nigeria Certificate In Education). You can read more about the NCE requirements on NTI (National teachers institute), one of the bodies responsible for quality education in Nigeria.

All of that said, the underlying fact is that, yes, a degree and a level of professional qualification is enough to market yourself as a teacher. However, that depends on if you want to be seen as a credible tutor, be competitive, marketable both locally and internationally and earn to also earn reasonably at your teaching job.

Tutoring Jobs for Bilingual Speakers

Many Nigerians are bilingual because English is not our mother tongue, though it is the official language that binds the 250 ethnic groups with their different languages together.

You have an added advantage as an English teacher if you can speak a native Nigerian language or other languages. It will improve your competitiveness in the labour market and improve your social life which will, in turn, make you more marketable.

As a Bilingual speaker, you can consider giving English tutorials to children and adults who can't understand the language but understand your native language.

Being bilingual inspires confidence and will improve your communication skills if you find yourself in an English speaking environment.

Professional Experience Counts

A professional is an individual that has undergone the necessary education and is duly certified to be a teacher in the classroom. Those who desire to become professional teachers must be duly licenced. To become a professional teacher in Nigeria, you need to be licenced by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). They charged with the power of self-regulation and the ability to lead ideas within the field of expertise in the teaching profession. Find out how to register with the TRCN and get licenced /certified.

Gaining professional experience will help your teaching career and make you more marketable. You will be able to state your area of expertise, the number of years of experience, where you have worked and the category of people you have successfully worked it.  The above information coupled with your achievement will give people a sense of confidence that they will get value for their money when they view your profile on tutoring online platforms like Superprof. ng or professional app like LinkedIn.

Having professional experiences is great for your CV and is a way around having to sit one of the exams we were talking about earlier in the article.

If you are researching teaching certificate options to teach English abroad, TEFL and TESOL certifications will give you an added advantage as a professional. TEFL programs are intended for teachers who plan to go abroad to teach students in a country where the primary language is not English while TESOL methodology is generally recommended for teachers who plan to work with learners who are non-native English speakers living in an English speaking country. Type TEFL/TESOL on a search engine online to view their centres nearest to your state in Nigeria.

You can start building your professional experience by signing up as a tutor on www. super prof. ng.

Again, you have to think long and hard about why you want a certificate to prove your level in English and subsequently choose the one that best suits your needs. However, you should never forget that some of these qualifications are internationally recognised and will look great on your CV.

When it comes to providing English tutorials, you have to highlight your qualifications, experience, degrees and training well in order to get your first customers. Once you've given a few quality tutorials, your clients will stay and spread the word. Soon your English course will be the most popular in the area and you’ll have a group of loyal customers.
