''The difference between art and craft lies not in the tools you hold in your hands, but in the mental set that guides them. For the artisan, the craft is an end in itself. For you, the artist, craft is the vehicle for expressing your vision. Craft is the visible edge of art''. - David Bayles

''Hands can cook, hands can create, hands can kill. There is no better tool than our hands.”

Crocheting has proven health benefits as the small repetitive movements involved can keep your hands, arms and fingers supple and your eyes sharp. The relaxed, repetitive motions such as the ones used in crochet and knitting can help calm down the body and the brain. Additionally, all patterns involve some aspects of math, keeping your mind sharp and letting you practice math skills.

The art of crocheting is fast becoming popular in Nigeria. The reason the demand for it is not as common as it is in countries like the USA, UK is because of the difference in weather.

However, crochet items like baby weather, caps, shawls and the likes are very highly patronized in Nigeria. Crocheting is an art and skill many Nigerians learn in their primary and secondary school at a very young age.

I remember I started crocheting in my primary school days and can't even really remember how I even learnt the basics. Not until recently did I understand that I mostly did the half-double crocheting to make the items I did.

People usually confuse knitting with crochet. Crochet is a little different from knitting as you’ll only need a single crochet hook rather than two knitting needles.

But what about crochet patterns?

To crochet an item you will have to understand its pattern. Don’t worry, there are plenty of places to find them. In this article, we’re going to have a look at where you can find crochet patterns so that you make shawls, sweaters, caps, bralettes, cardigans, etc.

Crochet Basket

You can make a crochet storage basket to keep some of your items at home. You could make them for your bedroom, kitchen, office, a sitting room or for whatever storage purpose you want.

Materials:

  • 2 balls of wool in one colour.
  • 4 balls of wool in another colour.

Dimensions: 40cm wide by 30cm long.

Techniques used:

  • Chain stitch
  • Single crochet
  • Double crochet

Steps to follow:

  • Start at the bottom of the basket and crochet in the round towards the top.
  • With the first colour (2 balls), make a chain stitch of 20 loops and then 15 chain stitches, single crochet, and half double crochet.
  • On the 15th time around, change colour and go up to the 34th.
  • You just have to fasten off the end.

Crochet Owl

Materials:

  • Three colours of wool or cotton yarn.
  • Two beads for the eyes and one for the nose.
  • Padding or stuffing.

Steps to follow:

  • Make the owl by doing a 6-loop magic circle from the bottom to the top.
  • Place a marker on the last loop of each line to indicate the middle of the owl.
  • Pull the yarn into the loop to finish the line.
  • For the eyes, create two white circles by doing a 6-loop magic circle. The same for the wings but with different colours.
  • You then need to put the owl together by placing the eyes and creating a beak with orange yarn.
