“To sing is to bring to the surface all the depth of one's being. - Marty Rubin.

Music is something that has been around for ages and can never go out of fashion. Music education has changed a lot over the years and the way we experience music has also changed a lot. You can listen to musical instruments and people sing while on the go through the advancement in technology. We listen to recorded music more and more.

Music as a subject of study in Nigeria has existed since 1842. It forms part of the educational structure in Nigeria, especially at the primary and secondary levels. This is why most children are familiarized with musical terms and instruments from a tender age.

Many Nigerian parents want their kids to learn one musical instrument or the other but we need to remember that the voice is also an instrument in its own right and can be worked on from a very young age. When you train your children how to sing, they become better and more comfortable in their voice.

Singing lessons will teach your children to improve their posture, control their breathing and pitch, build their confidence and make them become better singers. If your kids love music so much, they can go-ahead to start a career in it or even study as a course at the tertiary level of education.

The benefits of music and singing in a child's development cannot be overemphasized. From improving their communication skills to their cognitive processes and so much more. Between choir, music classes, and private music lessons, there are a lot of ways for kids to learn more about singing.

Songs to Sing with Your Kids That They'll Love

Kids usually first learn about singing and songs from their parents or siblings. Singing is an activity that gets different parts of the brain running and many Kids learn how to sing songs even before they start talking. There are lots of Kids songs out there you can choose to sing to your kids that they will enjoy.

Hers a list of some amazing songs that your kids will certainly love if you sing to them or they listen to:

  1. Baby Shark Song: If you have children or are surrounded by someone who does you have most likely heard of the popular Baby Shark song. Kids in Nigeria and all over the world love this song and of course, as they grow they'll get tired of these repetitive songs and want something with more lyrical complexity.
  2. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star: a nice lullaby to sing to children and the melody can also be used to teach them the alphabet if you prefer. The lyrics are from an early-19th-century English poem written by Jane Taylor, "The Star".

  3. Rain Rain Go Away: This song is loved by many Nigerian children and adults in their childhood. The song tells a story about a young boy named ''Johny" who is unable to go outside to play because of the rain.

  4. Head, Shoulders: Knees, and Toes: a song that is fun to perform and teaches kids parts of the body. This nursery hymn is such an educational song because children get to list and understand where some parts of the body are located.
  5. London Bridge Is Falling: This is a catchy classic and very young children probably won’t think too much about the meaning of the lyrics which talks about an Originally wooden bridge, London Bridge that was indeed “falling”.

There are many more songs out there. Any song that keeps your kid happy is good for singing along with them.

Ways Your Kids Can Be Trained To Sing

Children can learn to sing well from a very young age as long as they are trained properly and in the right way. Exposure to music and singing at an early age will help children to learn the sounds and meanings of words.

Singing lessons are a great way to teach your kids about the fundamentals of music theory without them also having to take lessons in a musical instrument. So if you want your kids to learn how to sing but don't know how to go about it, don’t panic, there are plenty of options for kids who want to learn how to sing.

Your Kids can learn how to sing via private tutoring and a good platform to get one of the best private singing tutors for them is on Superprof Nigeria. This way, the lessons are tailored to them.

They can also learn about singing by joining the choir in their school, religious or community centre. This option is a fantastic way for them to learn about singing while having fun with other kids in their age group.

You could also take it upon yourself to teach them if you know a thing or two about teaching or singing. However, this may be a bit tasking especially if teaching is not a strong attribute. You will have to dedicate time to learning about singing to be able to train them right.

One of my favourite ways of learning something new or improving on anything without having to spend so much is by watching Youtube tutorial videos. You can use this approach for your kids.

There are several youtube videos out there dedicated to training young voices. Just have a timetable and ensure they daily watch and practice what they learn on these video tutorials.

What Are Kids Taught During Singing Lessons?

I'm sure before your kids start with their singing lessons, you may have questions on your mind like what to expect and how will they be taught. It is a good idea for you to be aware or have an idea of what to expect that way, you have expectations for your kids.

First and foremost, it will be a good idea to educate your kids on why they are starting a singing class. That way they understand they are starting the lessons to learn and get better at singing. They will go with the mindset that they are there to acquire more knowledge.

You may want to schedule a meeting with the teacher before your children's first singing class to know if he or she can teach, transfer skills to them and also for you to explain some of your expectations to the tutor.

The teacher or tutor will also need to learn about the student, what they like, their level, their voice, and their ability. This way they get to know their students and plan the course for the upcoming weeks, months, or even years.

There are three parts to your child singing lessons:

  1. The Wam up part - This part is done to get the child prepared for the class. The warm-ups are to help stretch the vocal cords and clear the throat. Some breathing and stretching exercises can also be done to help prep their body and relax their muscles. This way they are mentally preparing them for the next step.
  2. Technique - Theoretical aspects of singing are usually explained to the students at this stage. The teacher will show the student the activities they need to do, provide them with feedback, and explain concepts to them. They would also get to work on their breathing, posture, pitch, etc.
  3. Rehearsal- This is usually the more enjoyable part for the kids as they get to sing. They start putting into practise all they have learnt so far.

How Much Singing Lessons For Kids Cost?

The price you pay for a child to learn how to sing in Nigeria is determined by a lot of factors like your location, your budget, type of lessons they are doing, the school they are attending, who is teaching them, the number of lessons etc.

The average price would be unrepresentative in certain establishments and parts of the country:

  • For private lessons: If you are getting a tutor on Superprof Nigeria, which is the best and cheapest tutoring platform, you could get tutors for as low as ₦500 per hour
  • Group lessons: They tend to be cheaper per student as several students are paying for the lessons. Students can pay as little as ₦2,000 monthly
  • Music Schools: They tend to charge much more. Their programme can cost as high as N300,000.
  • Choirs: Joining the choir is practically the cheapest way to learn in Nigeria. Most choir groups in Nigeria are usually as good as free for kids and adults. They are more focused on participation and rehearsal than studying singing.

Finally, remember that if your child would like to learn how to sing, you should consider getting them a private tutor from Superprof! They have tutors readily available to train them at home or via online classes. The choice is yours to make.

If you opt for online classes, with a decent webcam, microphone, and internet connection, tutors on Superprof from anywhere in Nigeria can teach your child how to sing online.
